It can sometimes be hard for young children to articulate their emotions, and in my experience they can often respond better to a puppet rather than to adults, as the puppets can be used objectively.
Using emotion puppets can help children to identify how they are feeling by looking at the facial expressions; it can open up important dialogue about their own experiences, which can really help the healing process and allow them to understand what they are feeling.
Using open-ended questions, such as “When have you felt this?” and avoiding the question “why?” is of much importance as it allows children to give more detailed answers about how they are coping, rather than trying to work out why, as usually they are not sure why they feel that way and it can feel very overwhelming to be asked directly and can make children feel even more overwhelmed.
